Buchi kombucha review

Buchi kombucha

Here we will give a hands-on, taste-tested review of Buchi kombucha. We’ll look into the benefits, ingredients, nutrition and flavour of this high-quality kombucha.

For this review we have taste-tested the ginger turmeric version.

Buchi kombucha is available in some health food stores in Australia (as well as on their website). Unfortunately you won’t find it in supermarkets.

Ingredients of Buchi kombucha

Buchi kombucha is what I refer to as a ‘real ingredient’ kombucha. This means that the flavour of the kombucha comes from real ingredients like juice, concentrate or puree. This is in contrast to a lot of widely available kombuchas in Australia which largely rely on natural flavourings and sweeteners for taste (eg Remedy or Lo Bros).

This is an organic kombucha and the specific ingredients are:

  • Organic Raw Kombucha 98.5% (filtered water, black/green tea, raw sugar & kombucha cultures)

  • fresh ginger juice (1.1%)

  • fresh turmeric juice (<1%)

As you can see from the ingredients, this is a simple and high quality kombucha with nothing questionable added.

Benefits of Buchi kombucha

This kombucha comes with various health benefits - especially this particular ginger turmeric version.

Ginger

  • Digestive health: Ginger can alleviate nausea and vomiting

  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects: Contains gingerol which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

  • Pain relief: Studies have shown it may help reduce muscle pain and soreness due to its anti-inflammatory properties

  • Lowering blood sugar levels: Studies show ginger can help in managing blood sugar levels

Turmeric

  • Anti-inflammatory: Studies have shown curcumin has strong anti-inflammatory properties

  • Antioxidant: Antioxidants can neutralise free radicals

Green tea

Green tea contains polyphenols which are strong antioxidants.

Studies have shown green tea may also:

Fairly low in calories

This kombucha has more calories than other kombuchas which rely on sweeteners, but it is still quite low at 13 calories per 100ml. For context, a soft drink has around 40 calories per 100ml.

Live cultures

The live cultures are perhaps this kombucha’s weakest point - there just isn’t enough information provided to know for sure.

There’s no indication of which strains are included and whether they are probiotic (ie beneficial to the gut).

There’s also no information on the actual amount of bacteria ie colony forming units.

Postbiotics

In very simple terms, postbiotics are essentially beneficial things microorganisms produce during fermentation. These include healthy short-chain fatty acids which nourish our gut lining and may help reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Flavour

The aroma is mainly of ginger with an earthy background.

The taste is quite layered with the zing of the ginger followed by the turmeric earthiness. There’s a nice depth to the taste given that it uses real ingredients - ie actual ginger and turmeric juice, not flavourings.

They brew their kombucha in oak barrels and I wonder if this is contributing to the complex earthy taste.

The acidity is moderate and makes the drink refreshing.

The carbonation is perfect - moderate and fine bubbled.

In summary, the flavour is fantastic and testament to the ingredients used and the brewing process.

Cost of Buchi kombucha

I paid $4.90 for a 375ml can in a health food store. This is great value considering lesser and smaller kombuchas retail for $4 in supermarkets…

You can also find it on their website.
