Chobani Greek yoghurt review
Here we will give a hands-on, taste-tested review of Chobani Greek yoghurt. We’ll look into the benefits, ingredients, nutrition and flavour of this premium yoghurt.
For this review we have tested the original, full-fat version.
This yoghurt is available widely in Australian supermarkets.
Ingredients of Chobani Greek yoghurt
Impressively, Chobani has only three ingredients: skim milk, cream and live cultures.
They strain their yoghurt three times to thicken it and increase the protein content of the final product.
Benefits of Chobani Greek yoghurt
This yoghurt has various health benefits. For context, we’ll compare a few key factors against Tamar Valley yoghurt - which is a similar yoghurt in this category.
Protein
Chobani’s main selling point is that it is high in protein. It is 8.6% protein, whereas Tamar Valley is 5%.
Fat
Chobani has less than half the fat of Tamar Valley - 4% vs 9.6%
Sodium
Chobani also has less than half the sodium of Tamar Valley - it has 32mg per 100g vs 76mg per 100g.
Calcium
Chobani performs worse in terms of calcium compared to Tamar Valley - 100mg per 100g vs 148mg per 100g.
Probiotics
Chobani appears to have a better range of probiotics than Tamar Valley.
It includes five strains:
Streptococcus thermophilus
Lactobacillus bulgaricus
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Bifidus
Lactobacillus casei
In contrast, Tamar Valley gives no information on the strains of bacteria present.
Both companies however give no information on the amount of bacteria present ie colony forming units.
Appearance
It appears thick with an almost cottage cheese-like texture.
Texture
The texture is very thick and somewhat creamy. Although the mouthfeel is not as satisfying as Tamar Valley. However, considering Chobani has less than half the fat of Tamar Valley it’s probably a good compromise for a lot of people.
Flavour
It has a normal soured milk aroma.
In terms of taste, the sourness is quite low for a yoghurt - definitely much below the level of Tamar Valley.
Overall, the taste is good - but not as luxurious as Tamar Valley.
Cost of Chobani Greek yoghurt
The normal retail price for a 907g (??) tub from Coles or Woolworths is around $8. This puts it at the premium end of the market.
Summary
4.5 stars out of 5.
A high-protein yoghurt with a relatively low fat level and 5 strains of probiotics. It’s a great compromise between taste, and good protein and fat levels.
Pros
high in protein
low in fat
five probiotic strains
good taste
Cons
not as creamy as some
price is higher than others
